This Standard specifies requirements for the manufacture of two product specification levels (PSL 1 and PSL 2) of seamless and welded steel pipes for use in pipeline transportation systems in the petroleum and natural gas industries.

For conveying gas,water and oil either in the oil or natural gas industries.

Hydrostatic Test of API 5L Seamless Line Pipe:
All steel pipe hydrostatic test should be implemented.Test pressures for all sizes of SMLS pipe, and for welded pipe with D ≤ 457 mm (18.000 in),
shall be held for not less than 5 seconds. Test pressures for welded pipe with D > 457 mm (18.000 in)
shall be held for not less than 10 seconds.

PSL 2 pipe ordered for sour service of API 5L Seamless Line Pipe
HIC/SWC test:The test for evaluation of resistance to hydrogen-induced cracking shall meet the following acceptance criteria, with each ratio being the maximum permissible average for three sections per test specimen when tested in Solution (Environment) A (see ISO 15156-2:2003, Table B.3):

 

  • crack sensitivity ratio (CSR) ≤ 2 %;
  • crack length ratio (CLR) ≤ 15 %;
  • crack thickness ratio (CTR) ≤ 5 %.

 

SSC test of API 5L Seamless Line Pipe:

  1. The test method solution control shall be in accordance with NACE TM0177:2005 Method C;
  2. The test piece shall be as defined in either ISO 7539-2, ASTM G39, or clause H.7.2.3.2 of this standard;
  3. The test solution shall be Solution A as defined in NACE TM0177:2005;
  4. The test duration shall be 720 h.
  5. The test pieces shall be stressed to 0,72 times or higher the specified minimum yield strength of the pipe.

After removal of the SSC test specimens from the test medium, the specimen surface previously under tension shall be examined under a low-power microscope at X10 magnification. The occurrence of any surface breaking fissures or cracks on the tension surface of the test specimen shall constitute failure of the specimen unless it can be demonstrated that these are not the result of sulfide stress cracking.
